🏛️ Ancient Panay: Ermita Chapel Ruins

Guho ng Kapilya ng Ermita · Dumangas, Iloilo

Our narration: Long before many of Panay’s famous stone churches were built, Dumangas was already an important center of early missionary activity. In 1569, ARAUT—now Dumangas—became a center of mission work under Fr. Juan de Alva, O.S.A. A stone church and convent dedicated to San Agustin followed in 1572. Imagine this place more than four centuries ago, when these stone walls stood over a very different Panay. Fire struck in 1628. The complex was rebuilt, but the great earthquake of 1787 damaged it again. What remains today is not an intact 1572 church, but the surviving ruins still connect visitors to one of the earliest documented stone church sites on Panay. The site was declared a National Historical Landmark in 1989.

Why it matters: These are surviving ruins rather than a complete 1572 building, so we describe the site carefully instead of calling the entire present ruin an intact structure from 1572.
